Intent

The PE curriculum at St John’s Catholic Primary School aims to develop the knowledge, skills and capabilities necessary for mental, emotional, social and physical wellbeing in our children now and for their future. Physical fitness is an important part of leading a healthy lifestyle. It teaches self-discipline, resilience, and determination to succeed.

At St John’s Catholic Primary School, the intent of teaching Physical Education is to give all pupils the tools and understanding required to make a positive impact in their own physical health and mental well-being. We want all children to experience a wide variety of sports and physical activities which will enhance life-long participation in sport or physical activity. We believe that PE can challenge and promote self-esteem through the development of physical confidence and problem solving. It can teach children to cope with both success and failure in competitive, individual and team based activities. The inclusion of dance allows children to explore their personal and spiritual identity.

Implementation

Pupils at St John’s participate in weekly high-quality, wide ranging PE and sporting activities. Our PE programme incorporates a variety of sports and physical activities to ensure all pupils develop and make progress. Our PE curriculum is structured to provide a range of sports experiences, during which every pupil participates to develop their skills and learning through competitive, team and individual sports. Within a supportive environment, where ‘effort’ as well as success is recognised, children are encouraged to participate to the best of their ability.  Children with additional needs are provided with appropriate support to enable them to take part and gain confidence in skills, understanding and motivation. Our curriculum aligns to the National Curriculum- this ensures that skills and knowledge are built on year on year and sequenced appropriately to maximise learning for all children.

During Year 5, our children also take part in a series of structured swimming sessions with offsite instructors.

Impact

Our children leave us at the end of year 6, with:

  • The ability to swim at least 25 metres and knowledge of how to remain safe in and around water.
  • A good foundation to take into secondary school Physical Education (KS3/KS4) and the ability to acquire new knowledge and skills.
  • Good levels of physical fitness.
  • The ability to take the initiative and become excellent young leaders, organising and officiating, and evaluating what needs to be done to improve, and motivating and instilling excellent sporting attitudes in others.
  • An imagination and creativity in their techniques, tactics and choreography in dance.
  • Knowledge of how to improve their own and others’ performance and the ability to work independently.
  • A highly positive attitude towards Physical Education.
