Our Curriculum
St. John’s curriculum intent
In agreement with KCSP, at St John’s we are aware of the many gifts our children possess and we recognise that it is our responsibility to provide every child a curriculum which enables them to enjoy a rich school experience and to develop in their talents.
Our aim as a Catholic school, is to inspire everyone in our learning community to grow in their knowledge and understanding and to develop skills that will enrich their life now and in the future. In this mission, we appreciate difference and we celebrate diversity.
We believe that all of us learn best when we recall, relate to or take part in purposeful, interesting and exciting experiences which we can then use as a basis for exploring our learning.
Curriculum design
At St John’s, we provide a curriculum that is broad, balanced, creative and relevant to today’s world. Children will experience a wide range of activities planned in accordance with the National Curriculum Children learn through the teaching of discrete subjects, although we also make connections where possible to ensure that children begin to understand the interdependence between the different curriculum subjects..
Using quality resources including schemes such as Get Set for PE and Kapow for foundation subjects, teachers plan a progressive journey through the children’s learning ensuring a logical and sequential progression of knowledge and skills across the school. Parents are actively encouraged to engage and support their child in all areas of their learning.
The subjects studied by the children are:
- Phonics and Early Reading (KS1)
- English
- Mathematics
- Science
- RE, following The way, The Truth and The Life
- Computing
- Art and Design
- Design Technology (DT)
- History
- Geography
- Music
- PE
- RHE /PSHE
- MFL (KS 2 only)
Our curriculum is designed to link planning and assessment in a structured, manageable and useful way. This supports the children’s learning and enables staff to assess progress, intervene appropriately and ensure a partnership with parents and carers by sharing information.
