Intent

The National Curriculum for geography aims to ensure that all children:

• Develop a curiosity and fascination about the world and its people that will remain with them for the rest of their lives.
• Have sound Geographical knowledge, understanding and skills; providing the frameworks and approaches that explain how the Earth’s features at different scales are shaped, interconnected and change over time.

At St. John’s, we intend for children to become engaged and fascinated by the world that was created by God. Children will leave school with an awareness of the variety of life and environments around the world, alongside an eagerness to explore. They will understand how our planet responds to physical processes and as well as recognise the impact of our human footprint. Pupils, at St. John’s, are taught to respect God’s world and have a positive environmental influence.

In their learning, we aim for our children to: gain locational knowledge and understanding of globally significant places, oceans and countries around the world; learn geographical skills, including how to interpret a range of sources of geographical information and how to collect, analyse and communicate data in a variety of ways; engage in fieldwork and observational studies within the local area; extend their love of learning through question-based enquiries and research- promoting awe and wonder about the world that we reside in; develop a recognition and commitment to consider sustainable development and an appreciation of what ‘global citizenship’ means.

Implementation

Our geography curriculum is planned carefully to ensure that it addresses the National Curriculum. There is a clear curriculum map which sets out the skills and knowledge covered; showing exactly how the children progress throughout the year, and year on year-from Early years to the end of year 6. Opportunities for cross curricular learning are considered, whenever possible, and we tailor-make our school curriculum linking in to the themes and topics we cover from the Cornerstones education hub. We recognise the fact that children have a wide variation in learning and cultural experiences within the ‘real’ world and we support and encourage stimulating learning opportunities for all children by matching the challenge of the task directly to the ability/level of engagement of the child. Global citizenship is celebrated, within the whole school, with occasions to consider and participate in global learning, as well as identifying and developing opportunities that support sustainability and climate change. We constantly strive to develop extra-curricular opportunities such as a gardening club as well as off-site/ outside learning activities.

Impact

As a result of our curriculum, children at St John’s Catholic Primary develop awe and wonder linked to the world around them and leave us having an increased understanding of the impact that being a Global citizen can have on their own and others’ lives. They can demonstrate a clear progression of skills and knowledge linked to both the physical processes of the world that they live in, and the impact of humans upon it. By having a secure knowledge of the world around them and a sense of responsibility for its welfare, children can have an informed opinion of the current issues facing the world at this time.
