Year 6 learn about Christmas in Germany

In Year 6 this term, they have been learning about Christmas in Germany. They linked in to World War I and followed the story of how the British and German soldiers paused their fighting on the fields of Flanders- December 24th 1914- to have a peaceful game of football.

They also researched traditions that began in Germany, but that we now also have as part of our Christmas celebrations here in England. They made a Christingle and considered the world (orange), Jesus’ blood (Red ribbon), cloves (fruits of the world- also linking to the Tudor pomander) as well as a Jesus being the light of the world (a candle).

They have also learnt the Makaton sequence for ‘Silent night’ and signed along to the song when it was sung in German.
